Ideal PDF
Providing an accurate, print-ready PDF is essential for reliable production and to meet expected ship dates. Below is a basic list of specifications a file should meet to ensure proper processing. Our preference is to receive each printing component (cover, text, dust jackets, etc.) as a single, complete PDF.
File Essentials
- All Fonts are embedded
- Text margins in the file are as desired and require no adjustment
- Accurate trim and bleed box sizes are defined in the PDF
- All files are built to trim size plus bleed added to all sides
- Proper bleed allowance is required whether elements bleed or not
- Text pages require 0.125" additional margin on all sides
- Cover pages (including spine/hinges) require 0.125" additional margin on all sides
- Lithocase covers require 0.625" additional margin on all sides
- Media box size is equal to the bleed box
- Minimum safety margin of 0.188" has been added to items not intended to bleed
- Effective resolution of halftones is 300 dpi or above (minimum 200 dpi)
- Effective resolution of line art is 1200 dpi or above (minimum 600 dpi)
- File contains only the colors desired for final output
- All elements must be process or spot colors. No RGB, CIE, or LAB color.
- All pages are in the same and proper orientation.
- Blank text pages must be included in the proper location
- Please add blanks as needed to text sections so page counts are divisible by 8
- No trapping has been applied
- All overprints and knockouts are set as desired
- Trim or register marks are not required and must be offset to clear bleed area if used
- Your media box and bleed box sizes will not match as stated above if marks are included
